The Professional Practice Year

Hands-on, Industry Experience

At the Lincoln International Business School, the majority of full-time undergraduate students are eligible to undertake a work placement between their second and final year of study.

The Professional Practice Year (PPY) is a year-long, full-time position in a role relevant to your studies. There are no tuition fees associated with The Professional Practice Year.

In addition, students taking the following courses are expected to take up Professional Practice, and have a dedicated Careers and Employability module embedded into the programme:

  • BA (Hons) Business Studies with Professional Practice
  • BA (Hons) Business and Management with Professional Practice
  • BA (Hons) Business and Marketing with Professional Practice

During your time away from the University on the Professional Practice Year, you will continue to receive the support of the Lincoln International Business School through your academic PPY Tutor, and can continue to make use of all other University support services.

The Professional Practice Year allows you to apply the theory you have learnt during your studies to real business issues, and the industry experience you gain can give you a competitive edge in the jobs market. A recent study by the University of Lincoln showed that a quarter of students who secured a position before graduating did so through work experience. Many students also find that their new knowledge helps them to achieve higher grades in their final year.

Our students go to work at a diverse range of companies, including (currently and historically), PricewaterhouseCoopers, Hewlett Packard, L’Oréal, IBM, Marks & Spencer, Panasonic, Toyota, Vauxhall, Warner Bros, British Sky Broadcasting, Boots, Xerox, and many more. Most students undertaking the Professional Practice Year are eligible to work internationally, and some have headed overseas to China, Australia, Germany, Spain and Hungary, while others have chosen to stay a bit closer to home.

We encourage every Lincoln International Business School student to make the most of this fantastic opportunity, and start the process of helping you to find the role you want from your very first week at University.

In addition to the Professional Practice Year, there are opportunities to get some relevant work experience as part of the degree course itself, as well as through various other University schemes, such as the Mentoring Programme or Consultancy Project.

Note for International Students on Work Placements

Students who require a visa to study in the UK must remain compliant with the conditions of that visa for The Professional Practice Year scheme. Our International Advice Team are on hand in Lincoln to help you understand what any limitations might be, so that we can ensure you can make the most of any opportunities available to you.

Any work experience included within your chosen degree course, such as the final level Consultancy Project, is open to all students regardless of visa status.

We are delighted to extend any and all help and assistance with career development plans, CV and application writing, interview preparation, mentoring and transferable skills to all international students studying within the Lincoln International Business School.
